During my teacher training at the University of Greenwich, I first discovered the profound impact music can have in supporting children with additional needs. What began as a simple curiosity, an interest in how music might engage and motivate learners, quickly grew into a passion that has shaped my professional journey ever since. I became increasingly aware that music is far more than a subject to be taught; it is a powerful tool for communication, expression, and connection, particularly for those who may struggle to access traditional forms of learning.
Over the past six years, I have had the privilege of delivering music therapy sessions to a wide range of children with diverse needs. In these sessions, I have witnessed firsthand how music can break down barriers, enabling children to communicate in ways they may not be able to through words alone. Whether it is a child finding their voice through song, developing social interaction through group music-making, or simply experiencing a moment of calm and focus through rhythm, these experiences have consistently reinforced my belief in music’s transformative potential. Time and again, I have seen confidence grow, relationships strengthen, and joy emerge through shared musical experiences.
Since returning to Wrexham, I was fortunate to spend time working within a school’s SEN unit, delivering music therapy sessions and reconnecting with the unique and powerful role music plays in such settings. This experience not only reaffirmed my passion but also deepened my understanding of how carefully structured, responsive musical activities can support emotional regulation, communication, and personal development. It reminded me that progress is not always measured in traditional ways; sometimes, it is found in a smile, a sustained moment of engagement, or a willingness to participate where there was once hesitation.
These experiences have only strengthened my belief that every child deserves access to meaningful and inclusive musical opportunities. I am committed to creating environments where all learners feel safe, valued, and able to express themselves freely. Ensuring that my lessons are inclusive, supportive, and engaging is not simply an aspect of my teaching practice, it is the foundation upon which it is built. I strive to adapt my approach to meet the individual needs of each child, using music as a bridge to foster confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging.
Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that music is accessible to all, regardless of ability or background. I believe that when given the opportunity, every child can experience the joy and empowerment that music brings, and it is this belief that continues to drive and inspire my work every day.
