Choosing a music teacher is about more than finding someone who can play well. It’s about finding someone who can guide, support, and adapt learning so that students of all ages feel confident, motivated, and able to progress at their own pace.

With over 10 years of experience teaching both group and individual ukulele and piano lessons in the UK and internationally, I bring a balanced approach that combines strong academic training, practical performance experience, and a clear understanding of how people actually learn music in real-life settings.

Strong Academic and Professional Foundations

A solid teaching approach starts with strong musical and educational training.

I hold a Primary PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from the University of Greenwich, giving me a strong background in effective teaching methods, classroom management, and child development. This means lessons are structured, engaging, and tailored to different learning needs.

I also hold a Bachelor of Music (BA Hons, First Class) from Bangor University, providing a deep understanding of music theory, performance, and musicianship.

In addition, my qualifications include:

  • ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Performance

  • ABRSM Grade 8 Music Theory

  • Diploma in Instrumental Teaching from Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music

This combination ensures that lessons are grounded in both practical performance ability and a clear understanding of how music is structured and taught.

Experience That Goes Beyond the Classroom

With over a decade of teaching experience, I have worked with a wide range of students:

  • complete beginners,

  • school-age learners,

  • adult beginners returning to music,

  • and more advanced students preparing for exams or performances.

This experience in both the UK and internationally has shown that no two learners are the same. Some students thrive with structured exam preparation, while others prefer a more creative or relaxed approach.

Being able to adapt teaching style is essential, and it’s something that comes from years of real classroom and one-to-one experience, not just theory.

A Balanced Approach: Structure and Creativity

A good music lesson should provide both clear direction and room for creativity.

My teaching approach balances:

  • technical development (hand coordination, rhythm, reading skills),

  • musical understanding (theory, structure, listening skills),

  • and enjoyment (playing songs, creativity, personal expression).

Students are encouraged not only to learn music accurately, but to understand it and enjoy it. This helps build confidence and long-term motivation.

Ukulele and Piano Expertise

Specialising in both ukulele and piano allows for flexible and engaging lessons.

The piano provides a strong foundation in:

  • music theory,

  • coordination,

  • and reading skills.

The ukulele offers:

  • quick musical success,

  • accessible chord learning,

  • and opportunities for singing and creativity.

Together, these instruments offer different pathways into music, depending on the student’s interests and goals.

Safe, Supportive Learning Environment

All lessons are supported by an enhanced UK DBS check and international police clearance, ensuring a safe and professional teaching environment for children and adults alike.

Creating a positive learning space is a key priority. Students are encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, and learn at their own pace without pressure or judgement.

Why This Matters for Students

The goal of music lessons is not just to pass exams or learn songs, it is to build skills that last:

  • confidence in performance,

  • patience and discipline,

  • creativity and expression,

  • and a lifelong connection to music.

A strong teacher helps students develop these skills in a way that feels achievable and enjoyable.

Final Thought

Learning music is a personal journey, and the right guidance can make all the difference.

With a strong academic background, extensive teaching experience, and a flexible, student-centred approach, lessons are designed to help each learner progress with confidence, whether they are picking up an instrument for the first time or building on existing skills.
